Astronomy For Children

January 7th, 2009 by · No Comments · General

Astronomy can be a life long pursuit.  And as with many things, even very serious things, people often get an early start.  This exciting science can provide hours of learning, that’s why astronomy for kids is popular.  Kids naturally gravitate to many aspects of astronomy.  Movies like Star Wars only serve to increase this attraction.

The Earth’s closest neighbor is the moon.  Its path around the Earth takes just over twenty seven days to complete.  Mankind has only ever walked on the Earth and the moon.  The moon is important for the Earth because it causes the tides through gravitational forces between the Earth and the moon.  It’s brightness in the night sky attracts many children to learn more about it and the overall subject of astronomy.

Then there’s our sun.  Earth is quite far from the sun.  We are between 91 and 94 million miles from the sun.  That’s because Earth’s orbit around the sun isn’t a circle, it’s an ellipse.  Life on Earth is only possible because of the sun.  The sun provides both light and heat to the planet.  Most people don’t realize that the sun accounts for around 98% of all the mass in the solar system.  What a hog.

Our sun and solar system reside in a galaxy called the Milky Way.  It’s full of space stuff.  But most of the galaxy is empty nothingness.  That’s a lot of nothing because our galaxy is 100,000 light years across and 3,000 light years deep.  Our sun is over 30,000 light years from the center of the galaxy.  The nothingness is broken up by over 100 billion stars.  In fact the galaxy takes its name from the appearance of the band of stars that shine from the main section of the galaxy.  It looks like a pool of liquid, thus the name “Milky Way.”  It’s a spiral galaxy, one of four major types of galaxies in the universe.  The others are elliptical, lenticular and irregular.

Astronomy for kids is well covered online.  From dictionaries and encyclopedic references, to programs that show different planets, solar systems and objects right on the computer, there’s more information than a kid would ever read.

Thinking on Continuing Adult Education?

January 7th, 2009 by · No Comments · General

Adult education is a kind of program in which the student populace gets to dictate what gives. If they are not ok with a certain part or portion of the agenda they can opt to change it. Sure students in other programs can do similar things, but not quite in the same league. You can see more on adult education here.

You might have done some studying when you were younger, but that is no reason to let it all go now. If you think you have not had enough, by all means find an adult education program from anywhere around you. Schools all over the place offer them; just pick the one that best suits your desires.

Hiring managers in a company, the recruiter is always very particular about degrees and education. Sometimes the only way you can guarantee the top spot is to study more. If you know that the position will be up for grabs in a couple of years time, go back to school now. More on adult education programs here.

People who don’t meet minimum academic requirements, don’t get dream jobs. People who get the dream jobs are those who went further when others stopped. Adult education is the key.

Many people think it is some kind of discrimination when they were meant to get a job but instead the job goes to someone else. So they begin to sulk and brood, when they should be doing something about it. Check out the other guy, find out what they have in their résumé that made them get the job, and then go get yourself something better.

Adult education is required when you are interested in making sure that your life does not fizzle away as did that of your father and your grandfather before you. I’m talking to folks who did not get a chance to school when they were young because they grew up in a farm or something. To get a proper job or make their mark in life, they need that qualification.

Applying for a job means that you know that you have the chance of getting it, right? Well, you want to ask yourself if you have all the qualifications that make you worthy. And then you might also want to think about getting the qualification if you don’t have it. If it means going back to school, then so be it. More on adult education online here.

There are a million and one job opportunities – new ones – that could suddenly come your way if you went back to school to do some more studying. There are indeed programs specifically meant for adults; several of them, in fact. And the jobs you can get with a better education are quite a lot.

Continuing professional education is not an option for some – it is a must. They know that how far they have come already in their respective programs is not far enough to get them where they want to be. So they decide, as they should, to take adult education plan to get to that end.

Many things in life are not the way they are meant to be. The fact that you have to school again as an adult is just one evidence of such. But people do it anyway because they don’t have a choice; they want better chances in life, and that is simply what it takes.

Government agencies many times have staff with limited qualifications. From time to time, then, they make arrangements for professionals from various institutions to come in and provide professional training classes where the staff can learn from. You don’t have to be in school to partake in adult education. Just be willing to learn anything new that you previously didn’t know and soon your life will be richer and better than you ever thought possible.

For years, a lot of people have been catching up with schooling that they missed in their heyday through various adult education schemes. The success they have found has caused them to return with happy news to their families. There is no question about it; it is a wildfire that we are all happy to have. Even if you don’t belong to the party that needs adult education, it should gladden your mind that lots of adults have decided to get more educated today. The entire nation becomes better for it.

In the United States of America, the first big time adult education program in record was that founded by one Mr. Josiah Holbrook in Massachusetts back in the 19th century. Truth be told, it was little more than a spatter of local adults who wanted to make a statement. Well, good thing they did. Much of the advancements realized in adult education today may well be credited to their honor.

A lot of people have regrets in their lives, and some of them could even get paralyzed by the thoughts of them. This does not have to be so; so many are taking their destinies in their own hands now, signing up for various adult education programs that they can lay their hands upon. You could be one of them, not just sitting back at home and watching the world pass you by.

You can improve on your education if you so desire, anytime you want to; all it costs you is some money and some time away from your family. However what you get back for undergoing that adult education program are increased chances for a promotion at work or for a transfer to a better career. Now you can afford to get your kids into better schools. You know it’s worth it, so why not go for it today?

Adult education has had more than its own fair share of philanthropists. Without them in fact, it might have been too difficult for several programs to get off the ground. However, they began to endow and support institutions back in the days when adult education was little more than an idea, to help fashion it into what it is today.

Ways To Learn To Speak German Quickly And Cheaply

November 9th, 2008 by · No Comments · General

As with most learning, learning German can be split into two methods that are polar opposites and most people can fit into one or the other to a varying degree based on their circumstances. There are people that do not have the time to spend but are prepared to spend money and those that have the time to spend but not the money.

Someone with plenty of money is happy to spend this money on reaching a good level of German (and they probably realize that they will make the money back with improved job prospects or increases in pay). A person with plenty of time will use this spare time but avoid spending money on becoming fluent. Both approaches will give you success but they work in different ways and have benefits and disadvantages unique to them.

So typically, a person that is happy to spend money on attaining their goal of German fluency may enrol in an intensive, immersion course in Germany that last for a few weeks or even longer. Immersion is often cited as being the best way to learn a foreign language. The main advantage of using an immersion process is that you are living in a country where the language is spoken.

So you are exposed to it 24/7. Although this is not strictly true as you might do some sleeping during that time, but you know what I mean. You will hear German all the time and you will be given ample opportunities to practice what you have learned in the course with people that you meet in shops, bars or at social events. This can certainly increase your language skills and get you to a level of German fluency or good conversational German in no time at all. But this is an expensive option and many people cannot affors this cost to learn a language.

For these people the other option is to avoid the costs associated with an immersion course and take their time learning the language. This method works and you can get to a good conversational level but it will take a bit of your time.

Typically, you would buy a home study course or attend night classes. In other words, you would be squeezing your German studies in between all the other daily activities that you have to do.

If you go for a home study German course, comprising of some audios or a software package, then you would probably use it in between your responsibilities at work or spending time with your partner. Of course this method would be cheaper than going to Germany or another German speaking country and taking a course but it would also take a bit more time to get the adequate German language skills to become fluent.

So how do you combine the two ? How do you learn efficiently without the huge outlay in money at the same time ? This is a tough problem but the solution is to bring the immersion method to you.

You may live in the back of beyond and rarely see a person, let alone a German speaking person so how can you immerse yourself in German if this is the case.

This is where audio-visual material like books, TV, radio, DVDs and most importanlty the internet come into the equation.Dive into the language by listening to German music and watching German TV programs or films as much as possible. Leverage the power of the internet to learn German. Go to sites where German language videos can be viewed like youtube. You can find all sorts of stuff like interviews, music and documentaries. Some are even subtitled with English.

You may also think about interacting with other people by using the online forums and chatrooms. Look into podcasts that feature German language courses. Checkout other popular websites that have German courses, many of which can be accessed for free. A recent innovation in language teaching thanks to the internet and voip communications is getting one on one lessons with a professional German teacher from the comfort of your lounge room. Whilst this will cost money, you can do it from home and it will work out to be a lot less than flying to Germany.

Give yourself as much time listening, learning and speaking German as possible. Devote a whole day or a weekend to this task. Weekends are best because you have less commitments and more free time. Each weekend, turn your home into a little part of Germany and your ability to speak German will come on in leaps and bounds.

Interested in getting a German course, then visit Rocket German Review . The site has reviews on three popular German courses, including the review of Rocket German course and compare Rosetta Stone to Rocket German.

10 Essential Tips For Student Borrowing

November 9th, 2008 by · No Comments · General

If you are presently looking for college financing then here are 10 things which you should think about carefully before you commit yourself to a loan:

1. Start by looking carefully at the award letter that you been given for your course and determine just which need based loans you are qualified for and how much money these loans would provide.

2. Then, look at your overall financial picture including things like education costs, the provision of any scholarships for college or grant money and money being provided by your family and work out how much money you need to borrow.

3. Do Not borrow more than you need. Regardless of the amount of money that a lender offer you, never borrow more than you need for your short and medium term needs.

4. Look at student employment as an alternative to borrowing.  Although working at a job while in college might seem like an extra burden it can be a lot better than struggling with high loan repayments after college.

5. Apply for a student loan as soon as you can.  You want to make sure that you get the loan you need and that your money is in place before your bills start arriving, so do not hang around once you know how much you need to borrow and go ahead and get your application in without delay.

6. Be careful to follow the instruction on any loan application to the letter as mistakes may well result in your application being rejected or to a delay in you receiving your money.

7. If you are applying for Stafford or Direct student loans then do not be surprised if the amount that is paid to the college is less than the amount you signed for because a fee of up to four percent will be deducted from your loan. This deduction will be made before the check is sent to your college.

8. Once you have taken your first student loan you should begin to keep a track of your borrowing so that you know just what your monthly repayments will be in the future. It is all too easy to be lulled into a false sense of security while you are at college and not making repayments, but you might well be in for a shock once you have left college and have to start making monthly repayments. You will find a number of student loan calculators available which will handle the complicated mathematics for you.

9. If you find, having taken on as much federal loan debt as you can, that you still need additional loans from a private lender then take professional advice before starting your search for additional funding.

10. If you decide to take on additional private loan funding then you will have to carefully rework your budget to account for the servicing of any additional loans while you are in college.

Butterfly Kits are a great activity for home or school.

November 2nd, 2008 by · No Comments · General

What is in a butterfly kit, and what can be done with them?

I guess most children want to ‘grow their own butterflies’ and I suspect a good many adults would like too as well (I’m putting my hand up in the air unashamedly at this point). A butterfly kit will make it easy to experience the fun of raising butterflies either at school or at home. You can raise a handful of butterflies in a small container and you don’t need to be a biologist to do it. No special equipment is required. It is very simple because all that you will really need is sugar.

We will explore all of the different parts that make up the butterfly kit.

There are a number of suppliers out there who provide butterfly kits, but in general, they are almost identical in what they provide:

  • Housing of some sort
  • Feeder
  • Caterpillars
  • Pot of food
  • Instructions

There are slight differences in housing depending on the manufacturer. It may be made of mesh or plastic;  the latter will contain a clear card. Actual construction of the kit is unimportant. What each one of them offers is a way of holding emerging butterflies safely, as well as a clear view of what is going on inside.

The feeder can vary significantly between manufacturers. Sometimes it’s a dropper or pipette, sometimes it’s a cotton bud to hold liquid. Once again, it’s not really important what is provided because it will be sufficient no matter what it is.

Normally you have to acquire your own caterpillars for the butterly kits. You can request your caterpillars using the coupon that is provided. We have varying reasons for this, the main reason being that you are ready to receive and care for the caterpillars. It’s no good if you get the caterpillars delivered and then you go away for two weeks! This way you can make plans in advance and be sure that you will have an appropriate length of time available before you place your order. Many suppliers will be happy to take a specific date from you on which you would like the caterpillars shipped.

The point being, all you need offer the caterpillars is a dish of food. Please be warned. Harm may come to your livestock along with other detrimental issues if anything else is tried.

There are full instructions provided with all kits, so you’ll know exactly what to do and when.

How can using a butterfly kit benefit you?

The kit will allow you to follow the life cycle of the butterfly, from caterpillar to chrysalis, from chrysalis to butterfly – all in the space of between three to five weeks. Children love taking this fascinating trip of a lifetime. (absolutely, and grown-ups as well) will love them and remember for years to come. The butterflies supplied have a breeding season that runs from March through September, so you may repeat the process as many times as you want during that time frame. The most supplied butterfly is the Painted Lady.

Additionally, you will not have to purchase new butterfly kits every time. You can use the housing again, simply reordering new caterpillars, which makes it an economical exercise to repeat. Remember to release the butterflies after a few days of watching them. If you have plants that butterflies like to visit, they will often stay for several days at a time. There is no ecological problem with releasing these butterflies into your area, they are very common and have no impact on the environment.

Even without a garden or a builtup area you don’t need to worry. Acquiring food finds butterflies traveling hundreds of miles fortunately, flying comes easy to them.

So there it is; butterfly kits and how to use them. My wish is that you have as much fun as I did using one.

The History of the Suit of Armor

October 27th, 2008 by · No Comments · General

The earliest stages of the production of suits of armor is throught to be traced back to the society of the Gaul’s who lived in modern day central/northern Europe.Originally from the geographical areas that now comprise France, Belgium, Switzerland and Northern Italy, the Gallation’s expanded eastward during the 3rd Century BC, eventually invading Greece, thereby influencing the evolution of battle protection across the Mediterranean during Ancient times,

The leather armor that was introduced by the Gallation’s was the first in a series of protective pieces that were added to the Greek helmets and chest plates worn by Roman, Spartan and other old-time soldiers.  While this type of leather/steel armor did not completely protect the wearer from swords, arrows, and other blunt objects, it did help to deflect light blows that deflected off the armor, therefore increasing the effectiveness of the combatant. Over the passage of time, leatther armor turned into other forms of armor which included chainmail armor and plate armor.  That further evolved into the suits of armor we all know that came around the 12th century.

A suit of armor that was worn by knights throughout Europe was made of several pieces of metal that were strapped onto the body over undergarments made out of linen or wool. The different pieces of steel armor made sure the soldier would have plenty of flexibility during battle or mounted on a horse. On a side note that is rather interesting, early gun poweder weapons could not penetrate this type of armor, so it was effective into the early renaissance age.

It is during the later Middle Ages that a suit of armor was expanded from simply personal protection purposes but to protect the horses that knights rode into battle on from similar injury from swords and spikes. Today you won’t see soldiers wearing a full suit of armor.  But, we can still see the concept and remnants of it in today’s armored vehicles such as tanks and humvees.

Best Way To Learn French

October 27th, 2008 by · No Comments · General

Anyone that speaks English as their mother tongue should consider learning French if they are thinking about acquiring a second language. The first thing that is apparent is that English has many things in common with French. For instance, many words in French and English are spelled the same and have the same meaning. This can be a tremendous advantage when learning French. And it can even help you learn a bit more about the English language too.

French is spoken throughout the world and on most continents. It is viewed as a world language and this is seen by the number of world organizations like the UN and IOC that recognize it as an official language. Thus you can have a more varied personal life and have enhanced career opportunities if you are fluent in French. So if French is the second language for you then you probably want to learn it quickly. Being able to speak to people is the best part of learning a new language so it's easy to understand why people want to be conversant as quickly as possible.

Communicating with people is a good way to learn and can motivate you to work harder. Other elements of language learning like understanding grammar or verb conjugation can be a tad boring but are still vital to getting a rounded education of the language. So what's the best method to reduce the tedious nature of learning an new language and focusing on the good stuff ? This article will deal with the best way to learn conversational French.

The general consensus is that the best way to learn conversational French is to do an immersion course. Learning French in a country where it is spoken natively is the principle behind immersion learning. So you could do a course in a part of France or many other countries where it is spoken by the locals, like Switzerland or Belgium for instance.

However, doing a language course in another country is often not an alternative for many people. To start, you need plenty of free time to do something like this. Many people might do something like this in a gap year in between school and college. Thus many people choose to do it in between school and college or in between jobs. It will also take a fair amount of money, depending on where you plan to go and how long you plan to stay there.

But the benefits are certainly there. I think there are two reasons why French immersion learning is good. The immediate reason is that you have to talk French. No one will be speaking your language so you have to speak theirs. You get out of the habit of thinking in English. You stop worrying about having a funny accent or being misunderstood. All the trivial excuses you might make if you where learning the language in your native land fall away.

The 2nd reason is that all the effort you put in seems to have a focal point. You can use what you learn. This acts as further motivation to continue learning the language, even the tedious stuff like grammar. So being able to order a meal or have a conversation in a bar will motivate you. And the sights, sounds and smells that you experience when you have that conversation will make it come to life and help you to understand more. It will also impact on your confidence in your French skills if you talk to real people.

Taking a French immersion course is probably the best way to be successful if you want to attain French fluency but it is not an impulsive action. It will cost in terms of time and money. This may not be practical for many people that have busy lives. Thus other ways that give more flexibility are classes or home study courses. In fact, some people even prefer to take a home study course as a primer before they undertake an immersion type course.

There are many self study courses available for French, Rocket French reviews gives you an in depth review of this popular course. It covers the French language tapes component and with Michel Thomas versus Rocket French compares it to another popular course.

Scottish History through the Ages

October 21st, 2008 by · No Comments · General

Early history of Scotland

Human inhabitation in Scotland dates back to prehistoric times since the end of the ice ages. The country had been home to humans all through the Stone Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Age with civilizations growing up. Though few written records of the period exist many artifacts are available of the times.

The recorded Scottish history dates back to the times of the establishment of the Roman Empire in England. The Romans were then occupying the present day England and Wales then referred to as Britannia, a Roman province. The Scotland region lied on the periphery of the civilizations flourishing centering on the Mediterranean region not only owing to its location but also on the cultural front.

The lore of the ancient Druid tradition that prevailed in Scotland in pre-Christian times got forgotten and lost over time because of several reasons. War, famine, proscriptions of later Christian missionaries- all took their toll in erasing the relics of the culture.

The development of Scotland

The fifth century saw the coming in of the Celtic immigrants from Ireland and settling north of the Clyde. These are the people referred to as the Scots. In the ninth century Kenneth Mac Alpine the king of the Scots added the kingdom of the Pict people to his own. Around the tenth century the land came to be called Scotland.

Many Anglo Saxons from England arrived and settled in the Lowlands of Scotland subsequent to the Norman conquest of England (1066). This resulted in the Scots gradually adopting the English ways. There was the establishment of feudalism with the chiefs of the clans becoming nobles. The towns began to grow and with increase in trading activities Scotland began to prosper.

The seaways had played an important part in Scottish history. Scotland, owing to its geographic positioning, greatly relied on trade routes by sea. Thus, it developed close connections in the south and east with the Baltic countries. It also held links with France and other parts of Europe via Ireland.

Modern Scottish history

Later, in the eighteenth century, following the Act of Union and the subsequent Scottish Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution Scotland went on to become a prime center of commercial, intellectual and industrial activities of Europe.

After the Second World War a period of industrial decline ensued in Scotland. This became a particularly acute problem and uncertainly prevailed. However, recent decades have witnessed something akin to a renaissance in cultural and economic fields.
